Kieran Culkin, Mark Ruffalo
TheStewartofNY/FilmMagic ; Amy Sussman/WireImageKieran Culkin emerged as the culprit he got Mark Ruffalo high during execution of The moment when more than two decades ago.
“I was 17 and I was stupid,” Culkin, 42, admitted of the prank in an interview with The Guardian posted on Saturday, December 28th.
Culkin and Ruffalo starred in the 2000 production James Lapin I play. The show was Culkin’s Broadway debut. The Succession alum admitted he saw a bag of props backstage and ended up deciding to replace one.
Weeks later, after making the switch, Culkin sniffed the real joint and “watched” Ruffalo get hit before passing it on to another cast member. Culkin shared that he decided to come clean during the show’s intermission.
“I’m like, ‘I thought this was a good joke. I’m stupid. Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” he recalls. “But they actually loved it. Mark says: ‘I haven’t smoked weed in 10 years; the second half is going to be a lot of fun. There was another actor who had never smoked in his life. You hadn’t smoked. She says, “Is that what you’re up to? And then Phyllis Newman walks in and says to himself, “I haven’t smoked pot since the 1960s. Thank you dear.’
While Culkin’s actors see no harm in the stunt, the play’s stage manager does not share the same sentiment.
“Then the stage manager comes in and says, ‘I don’t care whose it is or what happened, but Kieran, give me the joint,'” he muses. “I sheepishly handed her the cockroach and she said, ‘Ruin your life on your own time.’
After the incident, Culkin learned his lesson and never pulled a similar stunt again.
“I know, I know. But I was young,” he told the publication. “I’m 42 now. I know better. I’m not going to try to get someone high on the stage.”
Ruffalo previously shared the smoking mishap during a 2012 performance The Graham Norton Show. The Marvel star never revealed who it was behind the joke.
“There was a play I did where I had to smoke a joint in the first scene,” he recounted. “And of course there was a very naughty young actor I was in the play with, who at the premiere with all the critics, he dropped a real joint on the props.”
Ruffalo says that while he was on stage, he and his co-star were “smoking a huge joint on stage” and he didn’t realize it until he noticed everyone laughing at his antics.
“I was like, ‘Man, I’m in this tonight.’ I feel it. i’m burning I can feel it,’ he thought before starting to question his surroundings. “Why is this dude standing backstage laughing at me?” And the kid who put the joint on the support table is standing there (laughs). And I was just like, “Oh yeah…”
Despite the mishap, Ruffalo held no grudges as he ended up receiving the “best reviews” of his career.
