Watch: Tom O’Connell dismissed twice in same BPL match

Tom O’Connell was sent off for a timeout after a delay in arriving at the crease. He walked to bat at no. 7 after Haider Ali was dismissed. Khulna Tigers captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz took up the issue with the umpires. O’Connell was called time out by referees Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed.

However, Mehidy reconsidered the decision and motioned for O’Connell to return, showing great sportsmanship. The umpires then allowed him to bat in the game. The drama didn’t end there as O’Connell was dismissed on his first ball by Mohammad Nawaz. This sequence of events left commentators in disbelief.

The umpires dismissed O’Connell under clause 40.1 of the BPL regulations. According to 40.1 of the Laws of Cricket, “after the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the incoming batsman must, unless Time is called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batsman be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or departure, if this requirement is not met the inbound batter will be out.

Personally Feel Miraz did a fantastic job – Mohammad Mithun

Chittagong Kings captain Mohammad Mithun praised Mehidy Hasan Miraz for his sportsmanship in calling Tom O’Connell, who was timed out. Mithun admitted it was within the rules for the fielding appeal, but Miraz’s gesture showed a lot of heart.

“Personally I feel Miraz did a fantastic job. He showed he has a lot of heart. It’s within the rules for the appeal from the side of the field. Credit to Miraz for letting (O’Connell) back to the crease,” Mithun said. as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

“The batsman shouldn’t be late at the crease, particularly in a T20. He was a bit late to get ready. He was probably a bit relaxed when he was getting ready, maybe he didn’t realize we were going to lose wickets. That quickly made him late.
